For Kent County, we bulk motor oil into 55 gallon drums. We recycle some of the containers at our Wealthy St Facility after giving them ample amount of time to drain. We collected 88,000lbs of motor oil in 2024.

DLD takes our oil and other HHW, they charge us $0.15/lb. For convenience, we do the same with our cooking oil (different barrel) and they charge the same.

In the past we use to use larger bulking containers, but ended up with some PCB contamination and the vendor at the time stuck us with the decontamination bill, so we switched to 55 gallon drums.

For Allegan County we collect at our HHW room drop off appointments and also at our events. For the room drop off the oil is not “poured off” and instead,  whatever container they bring the oil in, must be left with us and those containers are collected in a 55 gallon metal drum.

Drug and Lab is our vendor for HHW and oil and they charge us $.94/pound for disposal.

We would not discontinue our oil collection either as we have many residents that utilize the service. We collected close to 1,300 gallons of oil last year.

For Barry County,

We don't have a permanent site so we only accept oil during the HHW events (2 per year) and we have four large drums set up for the one day, I don't know the exact size but we get a deal and work with Stoddard oil. We collected 1,745 gallons last year total and paid $75 each time I believe, which is $25 more than previous years. It's been a long time partnership from what I understand so I'm not sure when that relationship started, I've been on for four years. This is a separate vendor from our regular HHW. We actually switched vendors this year for HHW to hopefully save some money (D&L to Republic). *fingers crossed*

For Macomb County-

How do you take in used oil? (drum/drop/other/etc) We only collect during our HHW events. We have a 500gln tank we pour off into day of event. We also have a couple of large totes (200 gln) in case our tank is at or near capacity and we did not have time to have the tank pumped out between events.

Vendor Cost? It fluctuates and depends on if taking  our antifreeze too. Crystal Clean has started a stop fee. Buck's oil has a minimum number of gallons (225glns??) or charge a larger set fee if under the minimum number. If at or over the minimum, I believe it is price per gallon.  For our last 2024 pickup Crystal Clean charged us $361.31 (stop fee), $1.70/gallon, 4.90% surcharge. This was by far our largest invoice.

Is it the same vendor as HHW? It is a different vendor.

Differ vendor than HHW?  We either use Crystal Clean or Buck's Oil.

Thoughts? We do recommend to our residents to try an automotive supply store to drop off oil if they cannot make it to our event. We tell them to always call prior to just going to the store. Some of our municipalities will take used motor oil from residents, but I believe some have stopped due to cost and residents just leaving oil at their DPW gates when they are not there. We would have many upset residents if we ended our waste oil collection. It would also mean ending our anti-freeze and oil filter collection.

HHW Group,

Currently, we have oil drops, which I would like to discontinue use at our ES Centers.

I am looking into options and wondering what other HHW Centers/ Events do.

If you could let me know:

How do you take in used oil? (drum/drop/other/etc)

Vendor Cost?

Is it the same vendor as HHW?

Differ vendor than HHW?

Thoughts?

Thank you,
