At Washtenaw County, we have a couple of latex paint diversion programs: One for recycling and the other for re-use. Latex paint is our largest waste stream, and we really didn’t like turning people away with their latex knowing that it was landfill-bound so we knew we had to do something about it.

LATEX RECYCLING: Beginning about 3 years ago, we sent our latex to E-Paint in battle creek.  About a year or so ago, we discontinued that relationship, as our HHW contractor had reservations about dropping materials to E-paint due to a lack of certification of proper disposal, and the potential liability that comes along with that.  Now, our contractor delivers our leftover latex paint to Matthew25 Ministries, down in Cincinatti, for recycling. The paint is re-blended and then distributed to disaster relief areas around the county and globe.

LATEX REUSE: This summer, our new HHW Manager, Jon Tulman, initiated a relationship with an organization out of Detroit called Rippling Hope. Rippling Hope collects our latex paint that is still in new/usable condition, for use in low-income construction projects around the area. We call in for pick-up from them as needed.

Keep in mind that these programs only work during the summer months. During the winter months, we must discontinue latex paint collection due to freezing, as we don’t have access to heated storage.

Hope this helps, and Jon may be able to chime in more with more details too.

Thanks!

Noelle

At Recycle Livingston, we have been using E-Paint in Battle Creek.  We had some issues to work out with this company in the beginning of our relationship however we were able to resolve them all.  The contact information is E-Paint Recycling, Jim Crosby @269.760.8143 located at 56 Leonard Wood Drive, Battle Creek, MI  49037.  Our charge is $1 per container and so we ask for $2 a container.  Most people are more than happy to pay for this service and the paint is recycled.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Hi Cynthia – I am unable to attend your meetings but very interested in know how others handle latex paint. We do not accept latex paint at our HHW collection. For the past 13 years I have been educating folks on how to dispose of latex paint (see attached). Our HHW collection was last Saturday. It was just brought to my attention that waste haulers WILL NOT accept hardened paint.

Would like to know how others handle this.

Thank you.
