1)      Kalamazoo County’s HHW Center also accepts fireworks right alongside the other types of hazardous waste. We send them with our contractor monthly when they are here for our HHW shipment.

2)      Being fortunate enough to have a permanent facility, we have a “Swap Shop” area where we place new/like-new products – must be original containers - that have been cleaned up and meet our strict criteria – no garden products unless they are organic, all natural or straight fertilizer; car products such as oil and antifreeze are ok if still sealed, spray paint we allow, cleaners as long as they aren’t strong acids or bases, etc. Our customers and co-workers are allowed to take a limited number of items during the hours we are open to the public and we require them to list what they are taking and sign a waiver releasing the county from liability. This has worked quite well for the 20 years this center has been open.

Subject: Two questions

Hi Folks,

1)      Any recommendations on dealing with fireworks?

2)      Do any programs have experience with making usable HHW products available for co-workers to take?  We used to put a range of items on a table just inside out building but ended the practice at the directive of the county safety committee which was concerned that this would be a problem for OHSA or MiOSHA.  I’m particularly interested in knowing if anyone has explored this in light of our safety committee’s concern.

Thanks.
