Ants hate chalk.  We discovered this as children and would make a spiral around an ant on the sidewalk.  They wouldn’t cross the chalk line and  would spiral their way out. I have heard that the calcium carbonate desiccates them or that that the sharp particles injure them, but I have no idea of what the actual reason is that they avoid it.
