Hello HHW family,
I hope you are all enjoying these final days of summer – where did June and July go?? Christine Grossman (DEQ) requested I send this out to our group. The EPA has developed this draft fact sheet on PCB-containing
oil for collection centers. They are taking comments on the draft via email (ORCRPCBs@epa.gov) through COB (close of business) September 6th. Please consider reviewing
and commenting. EPA hopes the fact sheet will help prevent the mixing of PCB oil with >
50 ppm with other oil not subject to the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). When mixed, it results in the whole volume (which otherwise generally could be recycled and reused) having to be disposed of in accordance with the Toxic Substance Control Act
regulations, which is costly. It also results in the tanks and trucks that held the oil having to be decontaminated.
One practice that Kalamazoo County has put into place is to ship all containers of “used oil” from CESQGs through our HHW contractor instead of adding it to our residential used oil tank which is pumped by Stoddard and Sons out of Wayland.
Kind regards,
