Household medication disposal event today at the Capitol

MDEQ Minute - drug disposal video

Proper drug disposal is important to prevent drug abuse, prevent accidental poisonings, and to protect our water resources. With prescription drug abuse on the rise, surpassing car accidents in 2015 as the leading cause of accidental death, the need understand how to handle unwanted medications is even more important. Those who cannot attend are encouraged to view our new DEQ Minute video to find a takeback event and learn about safe disposal of medications.

Every year since 2011, the DEQ has partnered with the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) to increase public awareness about proper medication disposal.  Today’s collection runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  People can walk up to the main collection tent on the Capitol lawn or use the drive through drop off tent at the intersection of Capitol Avenue and Michigan Avenue.  For a complete list of what will and will not be accepted, visit http://www.michiganpharmacists.org/medicationdisposal.

At the 11:00 a.m. press event, Jack Schinderle, Director of the Waste Management and Radiological Protection Division, will speak with other MPA and state representatives about why it is important to properly dispose of medications.
