Hi Rosemary,

It can be accepted as HHW. Unfortunately in Michigan we do not ban this material from the landfill if it is from a household source so it could go in the trash.

Concerning your “Q” about Lead exposure, the bigger issue would be exposure to the phosphor powder that is in the tube.  The powder can be released when the vacuum is broken.  Sometimes it is airborne depending on the method used to break the tube. The lead in a TV tube is incorporated into the glass and is not “friable” unless the child was grinding on it or otherwise somehow creating dust.

I would suggest that they cap the bucket and label it as CRT glass and put it in their trash.

Subject: CRT TV

Hello-

Just wondering if anyone would know what to do with a broken CRT TV tube.  I had a resident call and state his son took apart the CRT to ‘see how it worked’ and broke the tube inside.  Should this be accepted as HHW if my vendor will take it?  If not, where should it go? It is in a 5-gallon bucket, could that be landfill-able?  Also, wondering if I should suggest he consider possible lead exposure to his child?

Kindly,
