Christine
Sorry I missed you today at the Roundtable and thanks for the information. I wanted to comment on two items:
1.
On the Household Hazardous Waste Coordinator Contact List
you have me listed as working under the Health Department whereas I actually operate out to the Office of the Livingston Country Drain Commissioner
2.
On the Drug Disposal Web Page and Map,
it lists some of the laces to dispose of meds in Livingston County, but not all of them. We have an organization in the County that started a Big Red Barrel project to take meds and the have about 10 spots in the county.
Would you like these spots to include on you map? I could provide you their contact information.
Thanks again

Good afternoon all! I touched on a bunch of topics at today’s meeting and wanted to share additional links to resources that provide more specific detail on most of them. If I missed anything, please let me know and I’ll supplement the
details below.
Household Hazardous Waste Coordinator Contact List –
This is the
list I publish/maintain. If you have any updates, please send them directly to me.
Solid Waste Recycling Amendments – See
www.michigan.gov/swra to find 1 page summaries on the various initiatives that comprise this interest in changing our solid waste regulations to focus on materials management instead of disposal. See also attached
press release on the funding discussion going on in the legislature.
Household Hazardous Waste Web Page – See the
general public page and
environmental professional’s web page. I’ll plan to reach out as time allows to update sections of the general public page to share information you all have indicated is important/relevant to share with residents.
Michigan Household and Very Small Generator Hazardous Waste Collection Site Regulations Webinar -
Recorded Webinar and Webinar
Notes
Drug Disposal Web Page and Map –
www.michigan.gov/deqdrugdisposal. Here you find access to all of the resources we’ve published for residents and healthcare, including the printable
map
flyer and
ad and recent
EPA memo on law enforcement collections and required disposal options (no burn barrels). If you have map updates, please complete the form. If you have a number of additions and the form is cumbersome, call me
and we can discuss other options to work with the staff/process we have in place.
Epinephrine Auto Injector
Guide – As you know pick-up is the biggest expense for many of the disposals services, so we encourage central pick-up coordination for schools to minimize cost. As a county you could assist school districts with this stream too by managing it as a
universal waste. If you like we could discuss this in more depth in a future meeting, perhaps with program staff too.
EPA Hazardous Waste Pharmaceutical Rulemaking – See our
recorded webinar and attached webinar notes if you’d like to learn more about this topic.
DEA Collection Center Registrant Resources See these DEA
rule resources and these DEA
registration resources. Contact
Cathy Gallagher, DEA Detroit Diversion Program Manager with questions at
Cathy.A.Gallagher@usdoj.gov or Christopher Grush, agent at
Christopher.J.Grush@usdoj.gov
or both can be reached by phone at 313-234-4000.
U.S. DOT Questions – My contact for clarifying U.S. DOT requirements is Sgt. John Hogan who can be reached at 734-780-6534 or
hogank@michigan.gov.
Michigan Solid Waste Law Diversion Center Requirements – See
Part 115, Section 11521b (see page 22). product
San Francisco Evaluation of Medication Disposal Products – See this
report for details on eight consumer products designed to render controlled substances irretrievable. Also recognize that some
hazardous waste disposal vendors
and most
pharmaceutical waste disposal vendors have their own products designed to meet the DEA irretrievable standard.

Thanks again for your hard work helping people divert these streams from being landfilled!
