At Midland, we do take appts as it helps with staffing and sizing the resources needed by our HHW vendor. It is a bit of a clerical hassle although we now have a software appl that allows self-scheduling on our website.

While we are admittedly not a rural county, Washtenaw goes by appointments only during weekdays – we can control the number of customers to fit our staffing schedule.

On our Saturday drop-offs where we can have as many as 100 cars an hour, I can’t imagine going by appointments.

I previously worked for two counties in WI, one which was relatively rural – we had appointments for the VSQG business and farm components only. They had to pre-register and give us the specific quantities they were bringing in so we could again control our work flow. But for our general public collections, no way you could go by appointments.

Subject: Very Small Population, First HHW: Take Appointments?

I am writing on behalf of one of our recycling partner counties: Presque Isle, population roughly 13,050. They are planning their first HHW event (in at least a decade) for this summer and trying to decide whether to take appointments or not.

We have always taken appointments, so I don’t have much perspective to offer them in this regard. If you represent a rural community that runs HHW events without appointments and you would be available to talk with them about your experience, please contact me.
